Please no bashing: Why are blacks disproportionately affected by AIDS in America

Is it drugs, promiscuity, lack of education, or carelessness in using protection?

Unfortunately, it is due to socioeconomic factors. Certain diseases and illness affects those of lower socioeconomic status due to lack of education and resources. This is particularly true of infectious diseases. There is no evidence that African Americans are any more promiscuous than any other race. However, there is a disproportionate number of African Americans living below the poverty line. This forces them into neighborhoods in which crime is rampant, schools are sub-par, and community and health resources are very limited. This environment is conducive to getting involved in drugs and crime, both of which can contribute to the spread of AIDS (sharing needles, prostitution, etc).

In environments where sexual education is readily available and free information on AIDS and free distribution of condoms is available, there is a much lower incidence of HIV. Unfortunately this happens in communities with enough money and resources to provide these services.
