Most people agree that you should never go below 1200 calories a day. That's a pretty restricted diet. How many calories you burn in a day are based on your age, gender, activity level, fat/muscle ratio, etc. etc. One day you might sit around watching T.V all day and burn 1500 calories, and the next, you might run 12 miles and burn 3000.
It's also universally accepted that you should divide your daily calories into 5 or 6 small meals.
